About inner wealth.

There is a version of success most high-performing professionals know how to chase. Goals, results, growth. The bar keeps moving and you keep clearing it. And yet somewhere along the way, quietly, without a moment you can point to, something starts to feel hollow. The achievement is real, but the fulfilment isn't there.

The more I work with leaders, and the more honest I become about my own path, the clearer one thing gets:

You cannot be fully powerful toward others until you feel safe within yourself.

The plain, bodily, settled-in-your-own-skin kind of safe. Safe enough that your body can send you honest signals, and you actually listen. Safe enough to sit with discomfort without immediately managing it away. Safe enough to be in the learning zone in front of others, to not yet be at your best, to make mistakes, and let that be part of the process instead of a threat to your identity.

I'm still learning this myself. But every time I move closer to it, everything becomes clearer. Reactions that used to hijack me become information. Discomfort becomes data rather than danger. From that place, you can actually see yourself, and lead from what you find there.

That is where authentic power lives: in the willingness to be honest about where you are, more than in any performance of strength.

There's so much to say about this, but in a nutshell, this is why radical honesty is where true inner power lives:

  • Truly authentic. You can only be true to what you can feel. When a reaction hijacks you, a defence speaks, not you.
  • Best thinking and decision-making. You stay in the room with your full intelligence, even under pressure.
  • Leaves you with more energy. Power that doesn't depend on image, control or approval never has to be defended, so nothing leaks away.
  • Creates safety for others. When you can stay with your own discomfort, you make it safe for the people around you to be human too.

Why the inner work keeps getting postponed

It's natural to be drawn to tap mostly into your intelligence and your drive for achievement, and there is certainly real satisfaction in getting things done from the outside. And at the same time, the inner work feels slow, unglamorous and impossible to measure. Turning toward the places where you feel tense, vulnerable, less than fully yourself doesn't look like progress. And it's rarely what you get praised or rewarded for. So it gets postponed, indefinitely, in favour of one more push toward results. Looking inward just feels so counterintuitive when what you want is outward results.

Why even more outward focus doesn't last

And that's exactly the belief worth breaking: that lasting results ask for even more outward focus. It's quite the opposite. Every time you override what's true in you to perform what's expected of you, something in you disconnects. The gap between who you are and who you're presenting widens. You get better at the performance and further from the source.

So many leaders and high performers feel drained, low on energy and inspiration, some of them close to burnout. That feeling is the accumulated weight of that distance.

Why looking inward makes you safer

And here's what I want you to sit with, because it sounds counterintuitive until you feel it in your own body:

The more willing you are to look directly at the places where you feel unsafe or vulnerable, the safer you actually become.

Because of the looking. When you stop treating those feelings as threats to be managed and start meeting them with genuine curiosity, the body stops fighting itself. That second layer of tension, the stress response you've built around the original discomfort, begins to release. What remains is just information. And information you can work with. The path that looks like a detour is the direct route.

What inner wealth looks like

What I want for the leaders I work with is inner wealth. The sense of purpose, genuine energy and quiet peace that makes external success actually worth something. A presence that doesn't depend on conditions being right, because it's rooted somewhere conditions can't touch. That makes you unshakable. You know who you are inside the world, so you don't need to defend yourself against it.

That's the work. Most people won't do it. It doesn't look impressive enough from the outside. It is, without question, the most important work you will do.

Let's explore it together

Of course, this is a very nutshell version of what is a huge inner growth journey. It's something we unpack much more deeply in coaching sessions, at your own pace and in your own situation.

If you'd like support with it, I'd love to hear from you, and what this brought up for you. Send me a message or book a free intro call, up to 30 minutes, in Utrecht, Hilversum or online, no pitch. Or join the newsletter for new reads and events, a few times a year.
